Gateway Gains Playoff Edge Over Plum With 47-38 Win

Posted on:

In a battle between two teams vying for playoff positioning in Section 2-AAAA, the Gateway Gators grabbed sole possession for fourth place with a 47-38 win over the Plum Mustangs on Tuesday night. The victory completes a season sweep of the Mustangs and effectively gives Gateway a two-game lead over Plum in the standings because of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Gators led wire to wire and took a 26-20 lead into halftime thanks to solid shooting from the field. Sophomore Jordan Edwards knocked down a pair of treys and freshman Mary Kromka netted six points in the half.

Despite falling behind 7-0 to start, the Mustangs stayed within arm’s length of the Gators because of strong shooting from beyond the arc. Plum poured in six 3-pointers in the first half, including three from junior Madison Cubarney. Senior Mandy Majocha dropped in two 3-pointers in each half and totaled 14 points on the night for the Mustangs.

Majocha’s first 3-pointer of the third quarter trimmed Gateway’s lead to 26-25, but clutch shots by Kromka and a stifling defense helped the Gators preserve the victory. Every time Gateway needed a big shot in the second half, Kromka stepped up and finished with a team-high 11 points. For her efforts, Kromka was named the Player of the Game by Quad-A Sports. Also contributing to the victory for Gateway were Amoni Carter and Jasmine Copeland who netted nine points apiece.

Gateway improves to 7-9 overall and 6-4 in Section 2-AAAA. Plum slips to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the section.
