Eight Quad-A Players Named To All-State Team

Eight WPIAL players have been selected to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Football Teams. At receiver, North Allegheny’s Elijah Zeise and Mt. Lebanon’s Troy Apke earned All-State laurels.  Zeise, who gave a verbal commitment to Pitt in July, had a career year in 2013 with 49 receptions, 952 yards and nine touchdowns. Apke, a Penn State-recruit, hauled in 40 passes for 728 yards and seven scores. On the offensive line, Mt. Lebanon’s Alex Bookster, Bethel Park’s Michael Grimm and Baldwin’s Sterling Jenkins garnered All-State selections.

On the other side of the football, Zack DeLuca of Central Catholic and Ben Huss of Upper St. Clair were chosen as All-State defensive linemen. Gateway’s Montae Nicholson (in photo) was selected as an All-State defensive back. As a receiver for the Gators, Nicholson corralled 41 passes for 810 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Additionally, Nicholson yesterday announced his intention to attend Michigan State University to continue his football career at the collegiate level. He also plans to run track for the Spartans. Also Wednesday, Bookser gave a verbal commitment to the University of Pittsburgh.
