WPIAL Boys & Girls Soccer Bracketology

With the soccer brackets coming out in about an hour, here is our thoughts at the Big 56 of how the brackets will go.

GIRLS SOCCER

Class 4A

#8 Mt. Lebanon (10-5-2) vs. #1 North Allegheny (17-0-0)

#7 Canon-McMillan (8-6-2) vs. #2 Upper St. Clair (16-1-0)

#6 Fox Chapel (10-4-2) vs. #3 Peters Township (14-1-2)

#5 Butler (10-6-1) vs. #4 Seneca Valley (13-2-1)

Top four were pretty straight forward in my book. Butler is the #5 seed because they were 1-0-1 against Fox Chapel in the regular season even though Fox Chapel finished 1/2 game ahead of them. Canon-McMillan gets the nod at the #7 seed because the Big Macs and Mt. Lebanon tied for third place and they were 1-0-1 against Mt. Lebanon in the regular season.

BOYS SOCCER

Class 4A

#8 Canon-McMillan (10-6-1) vs. #1 Seneca Valley (13-0-3)

#7 Peters Township (12-3-1) vs. #2 North Allegheny (14-1-3)

#6 Norwin (12-5-1) vs. #3 Upper St. Clair (14-1-2)

#5 Fox Chapel (11-4-2) vs. #4 Butler (13-2-3)

I think there will be a lot of discussion on this one. Seneca Valley and North Allegheny at #1 and #2 should be easy but you can make a case that all four teams out of Section 1 could be the top 4 seeds. Upper St. Clair deserves credit for winning their section so they go in at #3 for me. Norwin and Peters Township can be a discussion too at #6 and #7 because they tied for second place in Section 2 and split the regular season series. To me, Norwin played Chartiers Valley, Seneca Valley, Penn-Trafford and North Allegheny as non-section opponents while Peters Township only played Bethel Park and Brashear non-section so I give Norwin the #6.

Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park to play win-and-in match tonight for final playoff spot in Girls Soccer

by: Don Rebel

The final day of section play in WPIAL girls soccer is Monday.

The race for a playoff spot in Section 2-4A has been tight all season, and one game separates three teams.

It’s a win-and-you’re-in match when Mt. Lebanon visits Bethel Park.

The Blue Devils are 7-4-2, while the Black Hawks are 7-6.

In the first meeting Sept. 9, Mt. Lebanon blanked visiting Bethel Park, 3-0.

Canon-McMillan is also 7-4-2, but the Big Macs already have clinched a playoff berth heading into their regular-season finale at Baldwin (2-11).

If Canon-McMillan and Bethel Park lose, the Big Macs would have the better record. If Canon-Mac and Mt. Lebanon lose, they would be tied, but the Big Macs own the tiebreaker over the Blue Devils after going 1-0-1 against them head-to-head.
