Thomas Jefferson Wins Roller Coaster Game To Take Control Of Section

The Thomas Jefferson girls’ basketball team only scored in three quarters but it was enough to come away with a 45-42 win at Oakland Catholic on Monday night to take sole possession of first place in Section 2-5A.

Oakland Catholic took a 24-7 lead into halftime and held Thomas Jefferson scoreless in the second quarter.

The second half was a complete turnaround for the Jaguars, who erupted for 26 points in the third quarter to bring the deficit to 38-33 entering the fourth quarter.

The Jaguars relied on their defense for the final quarter, holding the Eagles to four points to finish the comeback, and sweep the season series.

Leading the way for Thomas Jefferson was senior Marina Petruzzi with 19 points. Junior Jenna Clark added 15 points. For Oakland Catholic, junior Jayde Boyd finished with 11 points.

The win improved Thomas Jefferson to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the section. The Jaguars can clinch at least a share of the section title on Thursday with a win in their section home finale against West Mifflin at 7:30 p.m.

The loss drops Oakland Catholic into a second place tie with Gateway. They now sit at 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the section. The Eagles will travel to Gateway on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a second-place clash.
