Shaler upsets New Castle; Snaps 24-Game Losing Streak

It’s been awhile since the Shaler football program had a winning record at any point during the season, let alone an opening week win.

The Titans took care of both of those on Friday Night when they traveled to New Castle and upset the Red Hurricane, 34-21. Shaler, competing in Class 5A, was on a 24-game losing streak and hasn’t won an opening week game in seven years before last night. The Titans last win before last night came in Week 4 of the 2015 season against Butler.

New Castle was preseason ranked No. 5 in Class 4A by the Tribune Review.

Shaler was able to force five turnovers in the game and jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Titans (1-0) will stay on the road next week when they travel to Kiski Area (1-0) for the section opener at 7 p.m.
