Peters Township Grasps Hold Of Section Lead

The Peters Township girls basketball team are one win away from clinching the Section 2-6A regular season title outright after defeating visiting Bethel Park on Monday night, 61-46.

The Indians hold a two-game lead on the Black Hawks after sweeping the regular season series. They won at Bethel Park back on Jan. 3, 68-60 in overtime.

Peters Township led throughout the game after jumping out to a 18-4 lead after the first quarter. Senior standout Makenna Marisa scored 12 points in the opening quarter to lead the Indians.

Bethel Park showed resiliency after trailing 31-18 at halftime to cut the deficit to three points minutes into the fourth quarter. That’s when Marisa took the game back over for the Indians.

Marisa finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Indians. Senior Isabella Mills and freshman Journey Thompson finished with 12 points apiece.

For Bethel Park, senior Maria Cerro finished with 20 points. Sophomore Olivia Westphal added 13 points.

Peters Township improves to 17-0 overall and 11-0 in the section. The Indians will travel to Hempfield on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in search of a section title.

Bethel Park drops to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in the section. The Black Hawks will travel to Connellsville on Thursday for a section game at 7:30 p.m.
