Penn-Trafford clinches playoff berth with 44-40 win over Latrobe

It was simple for both teams. Winner makes the playoffs. That winner, was Penn-Trafford who used stellar second half defense to overcome a halftime deficit and win the game 44-40 at Latrobe.

Penn-Trafford was hot behind the arc early jumping out to a 15-11 lead after a quarter. The Warriors went ice cold in the second quarter and Latrobe took advantage outscoring Penn-Trafford 11-5 and had a 22-20 lead heading into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Penn-Trafford started to play full court pressure defense and took control of the game outscoring Latrobe 10-2 in the quarter and took a 30-24 lead heading into the final stanza. Latrobe was able to make a run in the fourth, but clutch Warriors free throw shooting fended off the Wildcats and Penn-Trafford clinched a playoff berth.

Maura Suman was the PlayerPager Player of the Game leading Penn-Trafford in scoring with 18 points. Mackenzie Powell had nine points.

Anna Rafferty led all scorers with 25 of Latrobe’s 40 points. Emma Blair added 6 points.

Penn-Trafford improves to 8-6 in Section 3-5A and 14-7 overall. They clinch the final spot in the WPIAL 5A Playoffs. One more regular season game for the Warriors when they head to North Hills Monday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-section matchup.

Latrobe falls to 7-7 in Section 3-5A and 11-9 overall. Even though the Wildcats are eliminated from playoff contention, they still have two regular season games remaining. They head to Hempfield on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and to Gateway Monday at 6 p.m.
