Norwin Boys’ Claim 6th Straight With Win Over Penn-Trafford

Posted on:

The Norwin Knights won their sixth in a row on Tuesday night, and third straight in Section 1-AAAA, with a 55-37 triumph over the visiting Penn-Trafford Warriors in the MSA Sports & Quad-A Conference Boys Basketball Game of the Week. With Norwin leading 14-10 in the second quarter, the Knights grabbed command of the game with a 19-2 run to end the half.  Punctuating the run, sophomore Gage McCracken buried a wide open three-pointer and senior Zach Bryan followed with a steal and layup before time expired to send the Knights into the locker room with a 33-12 advantage. McCracken and Bryan both finished with 11 points apiece.

Despite strong second halves by Timmy Vecchio and Sean Stinelli, the Warriors couldn’t spark a rally to stave off their sixth straight defeat.  Vecchio and Stinelli scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Norwin traded baskets with Penn-Trafford in the second half and closed out a comfortable 18 point victory.

Using a triangle-and-two defense, Penn-Trafford held Norwin’s top scoring threat, Curtis Perz, to just six points.  However, the Knights received a strong collective effort from guards McCracken and Bryan, and forward Alex Haas.  Haas tallied 11 points and held PT big man, 6-7 senior Sam Kavel, to just four points in a terrific defensive outing.  For his efforts, Haas was named the Quad-A Network’s Player of the Game.

With the win, Norwin improves to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in Section 1.  Penn-Trafford falls to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in section play.  Both teams have non-section games scheduled tonight as the Knights host Woodland Hills and the Warriors welcome in Penn Hills.
