The top-ranked North Allegheny girls’ basketball team built a 31-point lead by halftime and cruised to a 64-34 victory over the Shaler Titans in the Section 1-6A opener on Thursday night. The Tigers defense stifled Shaler and the NA sharpshooters triggered a blowout win. Senior guard Courtney Roman netted a game-high 20 points and buried 6 of 8 from beyond the arc.

The Tigers leaped to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Along with Roman’s hot hand, junior Rachel Martindale knocked down three 3-pointers and tallied all 14 of her points in the first half to stretch the lead to 40-9 at intermission. Freshman Lizzy Groetsch posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as NA coasted in the second half to the win.

Shaler did most of its scoring with the game well out of reach as senior Meg Lydon totaled 16 points and sophomore Meghan Lacey chipped in with 10 points.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Section 1-6A. Shaler slips to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the section. The Tigers will face Kennedy Catholic on Wednesday, December 27 at the Wright Automotive Holiday Tournament. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
