Canon-McMillan Completes Comeback For WPIAL Title

It wasn’t easy, but the third time was the charm. After losing twice to No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (15-5-1) in the regular season, No. 4 Canon-McMillan (15-3-1) bested their South Hills rival, 3-2 in overtime, to win the Class 4A WPIAL Championship at Highmark Stadium on Thursday night.

It was the first WPIAL title since 2015 for the Big Macs.

Joey Fonagy scored the biggest goal of his high school career, heading the ball into the back of the net in the first overtime, allowing the Big Macs to storm the field with a walk-off win.

Fonagy almost didn’t get that chance. Mt. Lebanon was on the brink of celebration with a 2-1 lead and just over a minute left in regulation. Luke Gladden, who is a first-team selection just like Fonagy, scored the equalizer to force overtime.

The Big Macs scored the first goal of the game off the foot of Thomas Samosky.

The Blue Devils answered back with goals from Danny Simboro and Zach Nellas, and held that 2-1 lead until about a minute left in regulation.

Both teams will await their opponents in the PIAA playoffs.
