With the game tied 1-1 and on a 1-1 count, senior Megan Monzo belted a game-winning home run in the top of the eighth inning to lift WPIAL Class 6A champion Hempfield to a 2-1 win against Baldwin at Latrobe on Thursday.

The home run was the first of the season for the senior and sixth of the season for the Spartans.

Baldwin took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by junior Adeline Tagg.

Hempfield was down to its final three outs when they tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh inning. Sophomore Ashley Orischak dropped a bunt single and a throwing error allowed freshman Emma Hoffner to score the tying run.

Senior Maddie Uschock had another stellar performance in the circle for the Spartans, striking out 12 batters.

Hempfield improves to 22-3 and advances to the PIAA Semifinals where they will play Nazareth on Monday at a site and time to be determined. Nazareth defeated Latrobe in the other quarterfinal game.
