Hempfield Routs NA For Fifth Straight WPIAL Championship

Despite losing twice to them in the regular season, the Hempfield softball team got the most important win against North Allegheny on Thursday afternoon with a 15-0 decision in four innings in the Class 6A WPIAL Championship at Peters Township’s Pleasant Valley Turf Field.

The Spartans scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the second inning and five more in the fourth to earn its fifth straight WPIAL championship.

Senior Laura Fox drove in three runs and hit a two-run homer in the second inning to spark the Hempfield lineup. Olivia Persin, Ashley Orischak and Taylor LaVale added two RBI each. Sophomore pitcher Callie Sowers allowed only one walk and struck out five with a four-inning no-hitter.

Hempfield improves to 16-6 and North Allegheny falls to 15-7. Both teams will represent the WPIAL and Big 56 Conference in the PIAA tournament, starting Monday, June 3.

Hempfield will face District 3 third place team, Chambersburg, at 5 p.m. at Seton Hill University. North Allegheny will battle District 3 champion, Central Dauphin, at Lebanon Valley College at 4 p.m.
