Albert Gallatin was able to overcome an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Latrobe, 58-57, in both teams Section 3-5A opener Thursday night. The win ended the seven-game win streak Latrobe had in the series against Albert Gallatin.

The first quarter was sloppy with both teams turning the ball over frequently. It was very fast paced and tightly contested as Latrobe had the 19-14 edge after a quarter. The second quarter saw both teams settle in and start to get the offenses rolling. Once again neither team could create any separation and at the half Latrobe led 31-27.

At the start of the third quarter, it looked like Latrobe was going to take control of the game, jumping out to a 6-0 run and grabbing either team’s first double digit lead of the game, 37-27. Albert Gallatin continued to battle but could never get the lead under nine heading into the fourth quarter.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, it looked like Latrobe would run away with the game, leading 49-38, but Albert Gallatin began to pick up the intensity defensively and started to cut into the lead. With a minute to go, Albert Gallatin had cut the lead to 55-53 with 30 seconds left and with the ball on the offensive end, Courtlyn Turner got fouled, converted the basket, and then the free throw giving Albert Gallatin a 56-55 lead, their first since the first quarter. Albert Gallatin fouled on the inbounds pass and Latrobe’s Rachel Ridilla was able to convert two free throws, giving Latrobe the lead back 57-56 with 18 seconds left. Albert Gallatin’s top scorer, Bryn Bezjak got the call on the next possession for Albert Gallatin, missed, but Turner was there for the put back with nine seconds left giving Albert Gallatin the 58-57 lead. On Latrobe’s last shot attempt of the game, it was once again Turner, this time with the block, to seal it for Albert Gallatin.

For her efforts, Turner was the PlayerPager Player of the Game with 10 points, the game-winning field goal and the game-winning block.

Bezjak led Albert Gallatin in scoring with 21 points, Olivia Miller chipped in 13 points while Abby King had 12.

Latrobe’s Anna Rafferty led all scorers with 23 points. Ridilla pitched in 17 points while Lex Pynos had 11.

Albert Gallatin improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Section 3-5A. The Colonials return to the court Monday to take on Penn-Trafford at home in another Section 3-5A battle at 7:30 pm.

Latrobe drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in Section 3-5A. The Wildcats look to bounce back Saturday in a non-section home game against Ringgold at 3:30 pm.
