Baldwin made things real interesting in the standings on Friday Night as the Fighting Highlanders held off Bethel Park’s comeback bid, holding on for a 31-28 win in double overtime.

It was the fourth straight win for Baldwin, who improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the section. The loss was the first section loss for Bethel Park, bringing them into a three-way tie for first place in the section at 4-1.

Baldwin got the lone score of the first quarter when senior quarterback Mason Stahl connected with fellow classmate Naseer Penn for a 63-yard touchdown. The eventual hero, junior Joey Moeller connected on his first of four extra points.

The Black Hawks answered back, tying the game on a 3-yard run by Connor McGann. The Fighting Highlands took over from there, scoring two more touchdowns before halftime to take a 21-7 lead.

Junior Colton Brain punched it in from a yard out before Stahl called his own number on a 26-yard scamper.

Baldwin took the two touchdown lead into the fourth quarter, but Bethel Park wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Two short touchdown runs by Sean McGowan and Anthony Chiccitt tied the game and forced over time.

In the first overtime, Penn caught his second touchdown pass of the game, this time 15 yards from senior Justin Schmitt.

Bethel tied it up on McGowan’s second touchdown run of the game, setting up Baldwin’s heroics in the second overtime.

Moeller connected on his chip shot from 22 yards to seal the victory for the Fighting Highlanders.

Baldwin will have its hands full going for its fifth straight win when they travel to Penn Hills for a non-section game at 7 p.m. on Friday.
